A leisurely, niche, and relaxing half-day tour guide to Huotong Ancient Town
🌧️The Huotong Ancient Town in the drizzle has its unique charm. The ancient Ming and Qing streets, Helin Palace, and Huayan Temple are all worth visiting, but if you are with children and the elderly, you might consider a more relaxed way to appreciate this thousand-year-old town.
🚲We rented a tandem bicycle and rode through the streets and alleys of the ancient town, feeling the ambiance of the town in the light rain. Cycling along Huotong Creek, the clear water was refreshing, as if we were in the beautiful scenery of the Li River in Guilin.
🛶There are also passenger boats on Huotong Creek, and if you have enough time, you might as well take a boat ride and enjoy the pleasure of drifting on the clear water. However, even without taking a boat, strolling along the creek can also bring joy and a sense of the beauty of nature.
🎭Finally, don't forget to watch the national intangible cultural heritage wire lion performance and experience the charm of traditional culture. After the whole half-day tour, although it's off the beaten path, it leaves one with a sense of fulfillment and beautiful memories.
Admission: Free
Duration: 2-3 hours
Dining: The town has a food street and various small restaurants, which are not expensive per capita

Huotong Ancient Town
Huotong Town has a profound cultural heritage and is a famous historical and cultural town in China, a national key town, a national-level ecological town, and also a sacred place of Chinese Taoism, one of the birthplaces of Taoism in the southeast, and a AAA-rated scenic area. It is known as the 'Buddhist Fairyland' and 'Number One Cave Heaven' among other beautiful accolades.
The Ming and Qing Ancient Street, the core protection area of the ancient town, is 1700 meters long, built at the end of the Ming and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, starting from the 'Merit Archway', which was the necessary route to enter the town in ancient times. It has well-preserved ancient Ming and Qing residential buildings, with the overall architecture incorporating elements of Bagua and Feng Shui.
Merit Archway The 'Merit Archway' is an ancient building constructed for people who have contributed to society, with its Dougong structure following the architectural style of the Tang Dynasty.
Wenchang Pavilion Built in the 37th year of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty. The Tang Dynasty stone stele 'Huotong Cave Heaven' is preserved here, and in the 36th year of the Republic of China, the CPC Fujian East Special Committee and the representatives of the Kuomintang military and political departments held peace negotiations here. It is a county-level cultural relics protection unit.
Flourishing folk art National-level intangible cultural heritage: the first batch of Huotong thread lions, the second batch of Huotong iron branches. Fujian provincial intangible cultural heritage 'February 2nd' Lantern Festival.
The famous ancient Huangju water conservancy wonder site, which has a high status and contribution in the history of water conservancy construction in China.
Helin Palace One of the four famous palaces of Chinese Taoism. There is also the Zhiti Temple, one of the 'Famous Historical Temples of Fujian', which is a key national Buddhist temple protection unit.
There are many more attractions and ancient sites in the surrounding area, and those interested can stay for 2-3 days to slowly experience and observe. Due to time constraints, I only had a brief look.

Hutong Ancient Town
Ningde·Hutong Ancient Town|Listening to the story of the other side of the mountain The first time I went north alone,
I came to another strange city. For the first time, I took a bus at the passenger station, bumped and swayed all the way, shuttling through the mountains and forests,
I came to a quiet small town far away from the world, and talked with the villagers,
Listening to the story of the other side of the mountain. Having the courage to go alone is the first New Year gift I gave myself
in 2024.
Transportation: Take the high-speed train to Ningde Station, take the bus to Ningde North Bus Station, take Ningde Hutong Line to the terminal 14r, about an hour.
It's best to get on the bus from the starting station. If you are at the middle station, you need to wave to stop the bus. If there are seats on the bus, the driver will stop
After arriving at the station, navigate to the "Hutong Ancient Town Scenic Area Tourist Service Center", it's only a few hundred meters away, there is a Hutong Line Lion Pavilion in the service center
On the way, you can see the gate of Hutong Ancient Town on the left hand side, there are bicycles for rent next to it, and inside is the cultural corridor and door
Lion Dance Performance: I came for the lion dance performance, but the enthusiastic villagers told me that there is usually no lion dance performance, only when the leaders come to inspect or on major holidays, the holiday performances are as long as eight days and as short as four days.
Hutong, half county and half ancient town, is where the villagers of Hutong live. There are still many ancient shops, and the people who take the bus are basically locals going home or going out
If you have time, go to Hutong and listen to the story of the other side of the mountain

Huotong Ancient Town is a natural and cultural scenic spot that combines canyons, waterfalls, botanical gardens, forest parks, and cultural relics. A Huotong Creek flows slowly along the ancient town, the creek is clear, quiet and peaceful, and the hundred-year-old banyan tree by the creek has witnessed the long history of Huotong Ancient Town. A floating bridge connects the two banks. The creek reflects the rolling mountains, making Huotong Ancient Town more natural and deep historical charm, and it is also known as Fujian's 'Little Wuzhen'.
The ancient and flavorful Ming and Qing old streets are the core historical blocks of Huotong Ancient Town. It was built in the 13th year of Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty (1534), nearly two kilometers long, and here are preserved the Shouxing Temple, Wenchang Pavilion, Zhou House, Huotong Ancient Bridge and other 64 ancient buildings. The green brick and black tile, the flying eaves and the corners of the brick and wood ancient houses are scattered. Walking in the long bluestone alleyway that leaves traces of the years, the mottled wooden houses make people feel the rich historical and cultural heritage.
The Wenchang Pavilion, which was built during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, unfolds from east to west along the central axis, in order of the gate building, Wenchang Pavilion and the rear hall. The main building, Wenchang Pavilion, is a wooden structure, with an octagonal double-eave spire, 13.5 meters high, and is the representative ancient building of Huotong Ancient Town. The long river of history rushes past, the old street is still ancient and long, wandering here, giving people a sense of instant crossing.
